June is Garage Door Safety Month

As we celebrate National Garage Door Safety month this June, 1 out of 15 garage door openers may still lack the latest safety features or may not be functioning properly. With the majority of today’s homeowners using their garage doors as  the main entrance into their homes, it becomes more important these safety features are a part of the opener and working properly.

Since 1993, the UL 325 standard requires photo eyes / safety beams to be installed with all residential garage door openers. Openers manufactured  before 1993 may still function but lack these safety requirements. Liftmaster has recommended to their professional dealer network to use the simple 3-Step Safety Check which is the cornerstone of their Don’t Chance It, Check It program. A simple test can determine if your garage door opener is safe.

1) Check the sides of the garage door for properly installed photo eyes / sensors, mounted no higher than 6 inches off the floor.

2) Block the photo eye with an item taller than 6 inches and press the garage door opener’s close button. The door should not close.

3) Lay a 1.5 inch object on the ground in the door’s landing path and press the close button. The door should reverse off this object.

Be safe. Contact your local garage door professional today for an evaluation.
